As the 2015-2016 El Niño season arrives in southern California and Baja California, the Research Impact and Integration Team is encouraging residents to prepare for a rainy winter. On December 4 and 14, the RII Team, in collaboration with community leaders, Civil Protection Tijuana, and partners at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR), convened El Niño preparedness trainings in the canyons of Los Laureles, Tijuana. More than 70 residents heard from presenters with Civil Protection Tijuana about the importance of preparing for heavy rains and the possibility of flooding and landslides. Attendees each completed a short self-evaluation of their property’s risk, and learned about simple actions to increase their preparedness like creating a family plan, patching leaky roofs, and assembling an emergency backpack with supplies.
