PI Brett Sanders contributes expertise to a new report by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) that estimates 1 in 5 California residents and $725 billion in structures are vulnerable to flood damage. The California’s Water: Preparing for Floods report is just one part of a 9-section briefing kit from the Water Policy Center, which provides an overview of California’s most pressing water issues. The report predicts that California losses from flood events similar to those in 1861 and 1862 would far exceed losses from large earthquakes, which occur with relatively similar frequency throughout California. To mitigate these losses the report recommends expanding local funding tools, increasing incentives to carry flood insurance, building on Central Valley reforms, and prioritizing state funding.
